Hydraulic jumps: turbulence and air bubble entrainment
نویسنده
چکیده
-A free-surface flow can change from a supercritical to subcritical flow with a strong dissipative phenomenon called a hydraulic jump. Herein the progress and development in turbulent hydraulic jumps are reviewed with a focus on hydraulic jumps operating at large Reynolds numbers typically encountered in natural streams and hydraulic structures. The key features of the turbulent hydraulic jumps are the highly turbulent flow motion associated with some intense air bubble entraimnent at the jump toe. The state-of-the-art on the topic is discussed based upon recent theoretical analyses and physical data.

Convective transport of air bubbles in strong hydraulic jumps
A hydraulic jump is a flow singularity characterised by a significant amount of air entrainment in the shear zone. The air is entrapped at the jump toe that is a discontinuity between the impinging flow and the roller. The impingement point is a source of air bubbles, as well as a source of vorticity. Herein the convective transport of air bubbles in the jump roller is re-visited. Some analytic...
متن کاملPhysical Modelling of Hydraulic Jump: Dynamic Properties and Internal Two-Phase Flow
In a hydraulic jump, the turbulent flow region between the upstream supercritical flow and downstream subcritical flow is called the jump roller. The turbulence development in the jump roller leads to substantial energy dissipation as well as free-surface fluctuations, oscillations of jump position, air entrainment and unstationary velocity field. The time scales of these motions cover a broad ...

A hydraulic jump is characterized by some strong turbulence and air entrainment in the roller. New measurements were performed in two channels in which similar experiments with identical inflow Froude numbers and relative channel widths were conducted with a geometric scaling ratio of 2:1. Void fraction distributions showed the presence of an advection/diffusion shear layer in which the data fo...
متن کاملModeling Air Entrainment and Transport in a Hydraulic Jump using Two-Fluid RANS and DES Turbulence Models
Both RaNS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) and DES (Detached Eddy Simulation) type turbulence models were used in conjunction with a two-fluid model of bubbly flow and a new subgrid air entrainment model to predict air entrainment and transport in a hydraulic jump. It was found that the void fraction profiles predicted by both methods are in agreement with the experimental data in the lower sh...
متن کاملAir Entrainment in Two-dimensional Turbulent Shear Flows with Partially Developed Inflow Conditions
In plunging jet flows and at hydraulic jumps, large quantities of air are entrained at the intersection of the impinging flow and the receiving body of water. The air bubbles are entrained into a turbulent shear layer and strong interactions take place between the air bubble advection/diffusion process and the momentum shear region. New air-water flow experiments were conducted with two free sh...
